Finding New Ways

Call for Papers ended 9 October 2017


'Agility', 'digitalisation', 'Industry 4.0' and the 'Internet of things' may have become almost buzzwords, but behind them lies a radical change that has been happening in society for a number of years.

Although at first glance it is only about technology, global networking is making new business models possible, which threaten to eliminate successful companies from the market. This is how the success of streaming services such as Netflix created difficulties for video rental companies such as Blockbuster Inc. In the end Blockbuster Inc. had to file for insolvency. A similar thing happened to the Eastman Kodak Company. Kodak missed the boat in digital photography and could almost have suffered the same fate.

The old ways no longer seem to be going anywhere. New ways need to be found.

What form should the new development world, including requirements engineering, take?

Under the motto "Finding New Ways", REConf® 2018 aims to make this topic the main focus of the conference.

We would very much welcome contributions from your field of work or research. Let your presentation add value to the conference!

REConf® has always been a conference of delegates for delegates. Which is why we also wish to encourage people who do not necessarily make presentations as part of their daily work to contribute. The requirements engineering community, which meets at the conference, will welcome this; and be able to offer valuable feedback and share personal experiences.


Below you will find groups of topics to guide you in your submission. We are looking for presentations in the following areas:

New ways of writing requirements

We all know that "the system must ..." do something. But beyond such standard ways of writing requirements: what other possibilities are there for formulating requirements? How is the development process supported in your organisation - from determining customer needs to the finished product? What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to "traditional" wording?

Agility in software development and beyond

Agile practices are now part of mainstream software development. What has changed with the new approaches? What is different about how requirements are dealt with in an agile context?

The use of agile values and principles now extends beyond software development. For example, Scrum is already being used in schools. We are looking for presentations in the areas of HR, budgeting, management accounting, contracting etc.


What changes has your organisation made in order to be faster to market with your products? How do you conduct experiments in order to test assumptions about product features in the market? How does this new approach affect the way requirements are dealt with?

Model Based Systems Engineering

Requirements do not necessarily have to be captured in text. Model-based systems engineering also means: moving away from mainly document-driven development and accepting models as part of the requirements specification in various development disciplines. In which areas have you been successful in this? What were the obstacles that you had to overcome? What new type of cooperation between development disciplines is necessary in order to implement model-based systems engineering?

Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things

To better satisfy customers, how does industry need to change to go from uniform mass production to manufacturing individual single products? How can the interaction between people and increasingly autonomous machines be organised? What new 'Internet of things' products are you producing? What techniques do you use for determining and documenting requirements?

Special approaches in development

Do you develop without requirements, with little testing or with lightweight architecture? Is your approach a long way from being mainstream but ingenious and creative? Have you tried new approaches and are able to draw some conclusions? Our conference offers an informed audience and the right sounding board for you and your presentation.

Accepted Speakers

  1. All persons who handed in a paper will be notified by 10 November 2017 whether their paper has been accepted by the prgrom committee.
  2. As an accepted speaker you get free access to the conference 6/7 March 2018 and to the evening sessions of Monday 5 March 2018.
  3. It is not necessary to register as a speaker:  As a speaker or first co-speaker for a presentation that has been accepted, you do not have to register for the conference via the shop. 
     For additional co-speakers: please note the relevant point in the list below.
  4. Co-speakers: The speaker for each presentation that has been accepted has free entrance to the all conference presentations (not to the workshops). A maximum of one additional co-speaker per presentation has free access to the conference. However, this free admission is only valid when the co-speaker was named at the time of submitting the presentation.
  5. Registering as a conference speaker at the event: At the conference, you only need to give your name at the registration desk to receive a full conference pack and your name badge. If you would like to take part in the Speed Presentation, we would ask you to attend the keynote session and to take a seat in the first row: this will ensure everything runs smoothly. Please also note that, due to the high number of participants (particularly on Tuesday morning), there may be some delays in registration. 
  6. Travel and accommodation: Participation in the conference is free of charge for you; you will need to take care of your own travel and accommodation arrangements. You will find the link for booking accommodation at special REConf rates here. Because this allocation of rooms is limited, please book your accommodation as far in advance as possible.
  7. Speed Presentation: As last year, the day's presentations will once again be introduced directly after the opening keynotes. Each speaker has one slide and exactly one minute to introduce their presentation to the conference delegates. This is very useful for delegates in deciding which presentations they wish to attend during the day; and a good opportunity for speakers to promote their presentation to conference delegates.
  8. Final presentation slides: Please have your final presentation slides, your presentation in PDF format (which we will offer as a download after the conference) and the slide for your Speed Presentation ready 21 February 2018. You will get additional information on that.
